Our Story

MHYO, – Mental Health and Youth Organization

The Mental Health and Voluntary Youth Organization (MHYO) was born out of displacement, resilience, and a shared commitment to serve communities affected by crisis in Sudan. Established in Kassala State in 2024, MHYO emerged when a group of displaced medical doctors and community members recognized the urgent gap in mental health, protection, and basic services among internally displaced persons, refugees, and host communities. As a women-led, youth-led, and IDP-led organization, MHYO is deeply rooted in the lived experiences of the communities it serves. Our founders—12 medical doctors alongside other displaced professionals—transformed their personal challenges into collective action, creating a locally driven response that prioritizes dignity, inclusion, and accountability. With early support from UNHCR, MHYO strengthened its institutional capacity and established transparent systems to ensure effective and ethical service delivery. Since then, the organization has expanded its work across Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), Gender-Based Violence (GBV) prevention and response, Child Protection, Health, Emergency Shelter and Non-Food Items (ES/NFIs), and Livelihoods. At MHYO, we believe that healing, protection, and recovery begin within the community. By combining professional expertise with volunteerism and community leadership, we strive to restore hope, build resilience, and support displaced and vulnerable populations to reclaim control over their lives and futures.
